Why you specifically
Đây là điểm rất dễ nhầm vì tiếng Việt không có chủ ngữ rỗng giống như tiếng Anh. Trong tiếng Anh, phải có chủ ngữ trong câu, nên người học hay dịch trực tiếp từ tiếng Việt và bỏ chủ ngữ, hoặc dùng there is ở mọi nơi. Dummy it là it “giả”, không chỉ một vật hay người cụ thể. Ta dùng it với thời tiết, thời gian, khoảng cách, và các câu mô tả tình trạng chung: It is raining. It is 7 p.m. It is cold. It is important to study every day. Ở đây it chỉ để lấp vị trí chủ ngữ, không mang nghĩa “nó”. There is / there are lại dùng để nói có một vật/người nào đó tồn tại hoặc ở một nơi nào đó: There is a problem. There are two students in the room. Đây là cấu trúc giới thiệu sự tồn tại của danh từ. Nó khác với dummy it vì there is/there are không dùng cho thời tiết, thời gian hay các câu mô tả kiểu It is cold. Cần nhớ rõ: không nói There is raining, There is 7 p.m., hay There is cold. Cũng không nói It is a book on the table khi muốn giới thiệu một đồ vật. Hãy chọn it cho mô tả vô nhân xưng, và chọn there is/there are cho sự tồn tại hoặc sự hiện diện.
The rule
Dummy it is a fake subject used when English needs a subject but there is no real person or thing doing the action. We use it for weather, time, distance, and general conditions: It is raining. It is 8 p.m. It is cold. It is important to study. The important point is that it does not refer to anything. It only fills the subject position. There is and there are are different. They are used to say that something exists or is in a place: There is a problem. There are two students. In these sentences, there really is a thing or people being introduced. Do not use there is for weather or time, and do not use it when you want to introduce a thing in a place. For Vietnamese learners, this is difficult because Vietnamese does not have an empty subject like English it or there. You may want to translate directly from Vietnamese and leave the subject out, but English usually requires a subject. So choose it for impersonal descriptions, and choose there is/there are for existence and location.
