Short adjectives taking -er than.
The rule
Short adjectives form the comparative with -er plus than: cheap becomes cheaper than. Use -er with one-syllable adjectives (tall, fast, cheap) and with two-syllable adjectives ending in -y (happy, easy, busy), where the y becomes i: happier, easier. Spelling: double a final consonant after a single vowel (big becomes bigger, hot becomes hotter). Longer adjectives take "more" instead - that is a separate point. "Than" is required whenever you name the thing compared. "She is taller" alone is fine only when the comparison is already obvious from context.
