Why you specifically
Mệnh đề giả định với were dùng để nói về tình huống không có thật, không chắc là thật, hoặc chỉ là tưởng tượng. Nó thường đứng sau if, wish, và as if / as though, đặc biệt trong văn viết trang trọng. Ở mẫu này, were có thể dùng với I, he, she, it khi ý nghĩa là “không có thật” chứ không phải quá khứ thật. Ví dụ: If I were you, I would wait; I wish he were here; She talks as if she were famous. The rule
Subjunctive were is used to talk about unreal, hypothetical, or imaginary situations. It is common after if, wish, and as if / as though, especially in formal English. In this pattern, were can be used with I, he, she, and it when the meaning is not real, not true now, or only imagined. For example: If I were you, I would wait; I wish he were here; She talks as if she were famous. In everyday spoken English, many native speakers say was instead of were in some of these sentences, but for IELTS and formal writing, were is usually the safer choice when the meaning is unreal.
The trap
If I was richer, I would travel more.
If I were richer, I would travel more.
For an unreal or hypothetical situation, English often uses were after I/he/she/it, especially in formal style. Vietnamese learners may overuse was because it feels like a simple past tense.
I wish he was here now.
I wish he were here now.
After wish, were is used to show that the situation is unreal or not true now. Using was is common in speech, but were is the safer standard form in this grammar point.
She talks as if she was the boss.
She talks as if she were the boss.
After as if / as though, were can show that the comparison is unreal or imaginary. The wrong sentence sounds as if the statement is factual, which is not the meaning here.
If it was not so expensive, we would buy it.
If it were not so expensive, we would buy it.
Were is used for unreal conditions, including it. This is not about past time; it is about a hypothetical situation.
