Why stative verbs resist the continuous form, a frequent overgeneralisation error.
Why you specifically

Tiếng Anh thường không dùng thì tiếp diễn với động từ chỉ trạng thái (stative verbs), tức là những động từ diễn tả cảm xúc, ý kiến, tri thức, sự sở hữu, sự hiểu biết hoặc một trạng thái ổn định. Vì vậy, ta nói I like this restaurant, She knows the answer, I believe you, They want a new car. Những câu này dùng hiện tại đơn vì “like / know / believe / want” không diễn tả một hành động đang diễn ra, mà diễn tả một trạng thái hoặc quan điểm. Người học tiếng Việt hay bị ảnh hưởng bởi cách tư duy “đang + động từ” nên dễ dùng sai dạng tiếp diễn cho mọi động từ. Ví dụ, các câu như I am liking this restaurant, She is knowing the answer, They are wanting a new car thường sai trong tiếng Anh chuẩn. Đây là lỗi rất phổ biến vì trong tiếng Việt ta có thể diễn đạt trạng thái bằng từ “đang” hoặc không phân biệt rõ giữa trạng thái và hành động như tiếng Anh. Tuy nhiên, một số động từ có thể dùng cả hai cách tùy nghĩa. Have là ví dụ quan trọng: I have a car là “có, sở hữu”, nên không dùng tiếp diễn; nhưng I am having lunch là “ăn trưa”, nên dùng tiếp diễn được. Think cũng vậy: I think he is right là “tôi nghĩ rằng”, nhưng I am thinking about the problem là “đang suy nghĩ”. Do đó, khi gặp một động từ, cần xem nghĩa của nó là trạng thái hay hành động, chứ không chỉ nhìn vào từ đó một cách máy móc.
The rule
State verbs, also called stative verbs, describe situations that are not actions: feelings, opinions, possession, knowledge, and similar states. In English, these verbs usually use the simple present rather than the present continuous. Common examples include like, love, know, believe, want, need, understand, and belong. For example, we say I like this song, not I am liking this song, because like describes a preference, not an action happening moment by moment. Action verbs, by contrast, describe activities or processes. These verbs can often take the continuous form when the action is happening now, is temporary, or is in progress. For example, She is reading a book now and They are staying in a hotel this week are both correct because reading and staying are activities or temporary situations. Some verbs can be both stative and dynamic depending on the meaning. Have is a common example. We say I have a car to mean possession, but I am having lunch to mean eating a meal. Think is another example: I think you are right means an opinion, but I am thinking about the problem means an active mental process. This difference is important in IELTS because Vietnamese learners often overgeneralise the continuous form and say sentences like I am knowing or I am liking, which are usually wrong. A useful test is this: if the verb describes a state, feeling, opinion, or possession, use the simple form. If it describes an action, activity, or something temporary in progress, the continuous form may be possible.
The trap

I am liking this restaurant.
I like this restaurant.
Like is a stative verb here, so we use the simple present for a general feeling or preference, not the present continuous.
She is knowing the answer.
She knows the answer.
Know expresses a state of knowledge, so it normally does not take the continuous form.
They are wanting a new car.
They want a new car.
Want is a state of desire, so the simple form is correct; the continuous form is not used for this meaning.
I am having a car.
I am having lunch with my friends now.
Have can be an action verb when it means eat or take part in an activity, so the continuous form is possible here.
