Why you specifically
Câu tường thuật dùng để kể lại lời nói của người khác mà không lặp lại nguyên văn. Khi động từ tường thuật ở thì quá khứ, tiếng Anh thường lùi thì về một bậc: hiện tại thành quá khứ, hiện tại tiếp diễn thành quá khứ tiếp diễn, quá khứ thành quá khứ hoàn thành, và các động từ khuyết thiếu như can, will thường đổi thành could, would. Quy tắc này gọi là lùi thì (backshifting). Từ that thường được dùng nhưng nhiều trường hợp có thể bỏ đi trong văn nói và văn viết tự nhiên. Người học tiếng Việt hay bị ảnh hưởng vì tiếng Việt thường không đổi thì của động từ theo cách này; trong tiếng Việt, khi tường thuật ta hay chỉ đổi đại từ hoặc thêm từ như ‘rằng’, còn động từ vẫn giữ nguyên. Vì vậy, khi sang tiếng Anh, cần chú ý đổi thì của động từ chính theo mốc thời gian của lời tường thuật.
The rule
Reported statements tell us what someone said without using their exact words. When the reporting verb is in the past, English usually moves the tense back one step: present becomes past, present continuous becomes past continuous, past becomes past perfect, and modals like can and will often become could and would. This change is called backshifting. The word that is common but optional in many sentences.
The trap
She said that she is tired.
She said that she was tired.
In reported statements, the present tense often changes to a past tense after a past reporting verb like said.
He told me that he is busy.
He told me that he was busy.
After a past reporting verb, the verb usually moves one tense back in reported speech.
They said that they finished the work.
They said that they had finished the work.
A past perfect form is often used to show that the finishing happened before the reporting time.
I said that I can help.
I said that I could help.
Modal verbs often change in reported statements; can usually becomes could.
