Why you specifically
The rule
Reported commands and requests are usually formed with a reporting verb such as told or asked, then an object, then to + the base verb. In negative commands, use not to + the base verb. This pattern reports orders, instructions, and requests without repeating the exact words.
The trap
The teacher told us open our books.
The teacher told us to open our books.
After told, use to + base verb for a reported command.
My mother asked me call her later.
My mother asked me to call her later.
After asked, use to + base verb when reporting a request.
The officer told the driver don't park there.
The officer told the driver not to park there.
Negative reported commands use not to + base verb.
She told him sit down.
She told him to sit down.
Use the infinitive after told when reporting an order or instruction.
