Why you specifically
Trong tiếng Anh, in, on, và at đều là giới từ chỉ nơi chốn, nhưng mỗi từ dùng trong một kiểu vị trí khác nhau. In thường có nghĩa là “ở trong”, dùng với không gian kín hoặc khu vực: in a box, in a room, in Hanoi. On thường có nghĩa là “ở trên bề mặt”: on the table, on the wall, on the floor. At thường dùng cho một điểm hoặc địa điểm cụ thể: at the door, at the station, at school, at home, at work. Nhiều cách dùng không hoàn toàn theo logic, nên có những cụm phải học thuộc như mẫu cố định. Điểm khó với người học tiếng Việt là tiếng Việt thường dùng một từ/kiểu diễn đạt chung cho nhiều quan hệ không gian, còn tiếng Anh phân biệt khá rõ giữa “ở trong”, “ở trên”, và “ở tại/ở điểm nào đó”.
The rule
In, on, and at are all prepositions of place, but they do not mean the same thing. In usually means inside an enclosed space or area: in a box, in a room, in Hanoi. On usually means on a surface: on the table, on the wall, on the floor. At usually means a specific point, place, or location used as a reference: at the door, at the station, at school, at home, at work. These are not always completely logical, so some phrases must be learned as fixed patterns. English often cares about whether something is inside, touching a surface, or located at a point. Vietnamese learners often use one place word for all of these meanings, so the English choice must be memorized and practised.
The trap
The book is in the table.
The book is on the table.
Use on for something resting on a surface. In Vietnamese, learners often use one preposition for many place meanings, but English distinguishes surface, enclosed space, and point.
My sister is in the bus stop.
My sister is at the bus stop.
Use at for a point or specific place as a meeting or reference point. In is wrong because a bus stop is not usually treated as an enclosed space.
The keys are on my bag.
The keys are in my bag.
Use in for something inside a container or enclosed space. On is wrong because the keys are not on the surface of the bag.
We are at the room.
We are in the room.
Use in for being inside a room, building, city, or country. At is not correct here when you mean inside the room.
