The rule
Possessive pronouns replace a noun phrase and stand alone: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs. Possessive adjectives come before a noun: my book, your bag, her car, our house, their seats. The form its is also a possessive adjective, not a possessive pronoun; English does not normally use its as a stand-alone possessive pronoun.
