Why you specifically
Trong tiếng Anh, nhiều danh từ số nhiều không thêm -s hoặc -es như bình thường. Đây là các dạng bất quy tắc cần học thuộc vì không thể đoán chỉ bằng quy tắc chung. Ví dụ: child → children, foot → feet, tooth → teeth, mouse → mice, man → men, person → people, criterion → criteria. Người học tiếng Việt thường bị ảnh hưởng bởi thói quen “đã nhiều thì thêm -s”, nên dễ nói sai như childs, foots, tooths. Hãy nhớ rằng trong tiếng Anh, một số danh từ đổi hẳn hình thức ở số nhiều, và động từ đi kèm cũng phải đổi theo số nhiều: children are, feet are, people are. Với những từ học thuật như criterion, plural là criteria, rất hay gặp trong IELTS Writing và Reading.
The rule
English has some irregular plurals that do not take regular -s or -es. Common examples include child → children, foot → feet, tooth → teeth, mouse → mice, man → men, person → people, and criterion → criteria. These forms must be memorised because they do not follow one single pattern.
The trap
I have three childs.
I have three children.
‘Child’ is irregular in the plural. The correct plural is ‘children’, not ‘childs’ or ‘childes’.
My foots are cold.
My feet are cold.
‘Foot’ changes to ‘feet’ in the plural. Do not add -s to make the plural.
We need two tooths for this test.
We need two teeth for this test.
‘Tooth’ has an irregular plural: ‘teeth’. The regular plural ‘tooths’ is wrong.
There are many persons in the room.
There are many people in the room.
‘Person’ becomes ‘people’ in the plural. ‘Persons’ is not the normal plural in this meaning.
