Verb plus particle with no object, as in break down.
Why you specifically

Cụm động từ nội động từ là cụm động từ gồm động từ + tiểu từ nhưng không đi với tân ngữ trực tiếp. Nghĩa của câu đã đủ mà không cần thêm một tân ngữ: ví dụ 'The plane took off', 'My car broke down', 'The meeting broke up'. Ví dụ 'The engine gave out' là đúng, còn 'The engine gave out the car' là sai. Nếu cần nêu đối tượng, phải diễn đạt bằng cấu trúc khác, không đặt trực tiếp sau cụm động từ.
The rule
Intransitive phrasal verbs are verb + particle combinations that do not take a direct object. The meaning is complete without an object: for example, 'The plane took off', 'My car broke down', and 'The meeting broke up'. This is important in IELTS because Vietnamese often allows a verb plus extra words more freely, so learners may try to add an object after every phrasal verb. In English, some phrasal verbs are transitive and need an object, but intransitive phrasal verbs do not. If you add a direct object after an intransitive phrasal verb, the sentence becomes wrong. To check, ask: can I put 'what?' or 'whom?' after the phrasal verb? If the answer is no, the phrasal verb is probably intransitive. For example, 'The engine gave out' is correct, but 'The engine gave out the car' is not. The object, if needed, must be expressed in another way, not after the phrasal verb.
The trap

My car broke down my way to work.
My car broke down on the way to work.
Break down is intransitive here, so it cannot take a direct object like 'my car' after the verb itself. The sentence needs the whole phrasal verb 'broke down' with no object.
The meeting froze up the computer.
The meeting started late because the computer froze up.
Freeze up can be intransitive, meaning it stopped working. It does not take a direct object here.
The plane took off the passengers at 8 p.m.
The plane took off at 8 p.m.
Take off is intransitive in this meaning, so it does not take an object after it.
Her voice gave out the speech.
Her voice gave out after a long speech.
Give out can mean 'stop working' or 'stop before finishing', and in this use it does not take an object.
