An action completed before another past action.
Why you specifically

Thường gặp với before, when, by the time, after, already, never. Ví dụ, She had left before I arrived nghĩa là cô ấy rời đi trước lúc tôi đến.
The rule
Past perfect simple is formed with had + past participle. We use it to show that one past action happened before another past action or before a specific past time. In the sentence pattern, the earlier action often appears with before, when, by the time, after, already, or never. Compare it with past simple: past simple describes a finished action in the past, but it does not clearly show that one past action happened earlier than another. For example, She left before I arrived focuses on two past events in sequence, but in careful grammar teaching we want the earlier action to be marked clearly as had left. This is especially important in IELTS writing, where clear time order improves accuracy. Form: subject + had + past participle negative: subject + had not + past participle question: Had + subject + past participle? Common Vietnamese interference: learners often use past simple for both actions because Vietnamese does not change the verb form to show an earlier past action. In English, the earlier action should often take had + past participle.
Both correct
Every sentence here is correct English. Only the meaning changes.
She had left before I arrived.
Emphasises that her leaving was finished before I got there. Preferred in writing when the order of events is the point.
She left before I arrived.
Also correct. "Before" already fixes the order, so the past simple is natural here, especially in speech.
The trap

I finished my homework when my friend called.
I had finished my homework when my friend called.
Use past perfect for the completed action that happened before the other past event.
They already ate dinner by the time we got there.
They had already eaten dinner by the time we got there.
Past perfect shows the dinner was finished before we arrived.
By 2019, she lived in Hanoi for five years.
By 2019, she had lived in Hanoi for five years.
The living action started before a past time and continued up to that time, so past perfect is needed.
