Why you specifically
Needn't have + V3/V-ed dùng khi một hành động ĐÃ xảy ra, nhưng sau đó mới biết là hành động đó không cần thiết. Nghĩa là người nói/người viết vẫn làm việc đó, nhưng việc làm ấy là “thừa”, “phí công”, hoặc “không đáng phải làm”. Ví dụ: I needn't have bought bread. = Tôi đã mua bánh mì, nhưng hóa ra không cần mua. Đây khác với didn't need to. Didn't need to thường nhấn mạnh là “không cần phải làm”, và rất hay dùng cho việc chưa làm hoặc không nhấn vào việc đã làm rồi. Trong IELTS, hãy nhớ: needn't have = đã làm rồi nhưng không cần; cấu trúc là needn't have + past participle: needn't have gone, needn't have called, needn't have waited.
The rule
Needn't have + past participle is used when someone did something, but later it turns out the action was unnecessary. The action still happened, so this form is different from didn't need to, which usually means the action was unnecessary and often implies it was not done. In IELTS writing and speaking, use needn't have when you want to show regret, wasted effort, or unnecessary action after the fact. The pattern is needn't have + past participle: needn't have gone, needn't have bought, needn't have waited.

Needn't have is used when someone did something that later turned out to be unnecessary.

Needn't have emphasizes that the calling happened, but it was not necessary.
