Why you specifically

The rule
Narrative tenses help you tell a clear past story by showing time order and background. Past simple is for completed events in the story: I opened the door, she arrived, they left. Past continuous is for an action in progress or background: I was cooking when the phone rang. Past perfect is for an earlier past action before another past moment: When I arrived, he had already gone. A good narrative often combines these forms. For example: While I was waiting for the bus, I realized that I had left my wallet at home, so I called a taxi. Waiting is the background action, realized is the main past event, and had left shows the earlier event. Important: do not use past perfect for every past verb. Use it only when you need to make the earlier time clear. If the order is already obvious, past simple is often enough.
The trap
I walked home when it started to rain.

Use past continuous for the background action and past simple for the completed event that interrupts it.
She left before I arrived.
She had left before I arrived.
Use past perfect for the earlier past event, and past simple for the later past event.
While I studied, my brother watched TV.
While I was studying, my brother was watching TV.
Use past continuous for two actions happening at the same time in the past.
After he finished the report, he sent it to his boss.
After he had finished the report, he sent it to his boss.
Use past perfect to show that finishing happened before sending in the past narrative.
