Why you specifically
The rule
Indefinite pronouns such as someone, anybody, nobody, and everyone usually refer to one unknown person or thing, so they normally take singular verbs: Someone is here, Nobody knows, Everyone has. In English, this is true even when the meaning feels like “many people” or “all people.” Some forms, like everyone and nobody, always behave as singular in standard grammar. In questions and negatives, words like anything and anybody are also singular in form.
