Why you specifically
For, during, và while đều nói về thời gian, nhưng không dùng thay thế cho nhau. Dùng for + một khoảng thời gian, ví dụ for two hours, for a week, for three days. Dùng during + một danh từ chỉ sự kiện hoặc một giai đoạn, ví dụ during the lesson, during the holiday, during the meeting. Dùng while + một mệnh đề, tức là có chủ ngữ và động từ, ví dụ while I was studying, while the baby slept. Cách nhớ nhanh: nếu ý là “trong bao lâu” thì dùng for; nếu ý là “trong lúc nào / trong sự kiện nào” thì dùng during; nếu sau đó có cả chủ ngữ và động từ thì dùng while. Người Việt hay nhầm vì từ “trong” trong tiếng Việt có thể tương ứng với cả during, for, và while tùy ngữ cảnh. Vì vậy, không nên dịch từng từ một. Hãy nhìn cấu trúc của câu tiếng Anh trước. The rule
For, during, and while are all used to talk about time, but they are not interchangeable. Use for + a length of time, such as for two hours or for a week; use during + a noun, such as during the lesson or during the holiday; use while + a clause, such as while I was studying or while the baby slept. A simple test is this: if the time expression answers how long, use for; if it names an event or period, use during; if it includes a subject and verb, use while. In IELTS writing and speaking, Vietnamese learners often mix during and for because both can be translated as trong, but English makes a stronger form distinction.
The trap
We stayed in Hanoi during three days.
We stayed in Hanoi for three days.
Use for with a length of time. Three days tells us how long the action lasted.
I met my teacher for the meeting.
I met my teacher during the meeting.
Use during with a noun for a period or event. Meeting is a noun, so during is correct here.
The power went out during I was cooking dinner.
The power went out while I was cooking dinner.
Use while with a clause about an action in progress. It connects two actions happening at the same time.
I studied English during two hours every day.
I studied English for two hours every day.
For is used with a duration. It does not mean 'throughout the whole period' in this structure.
