Why you specifically
The rule
As ... as is the standard pattern for showing equality in English. Use as + adjective/adverb + as. In negative sentences, English normally uses not as ... as to show that one thing has less of a quality than another.
The trap
My car is so fast as my brother's car.
My car is as fast as my brother's car.
Use as + adjective + as to show equality.

In the negative, English usually uses not as ... as to show less equality.
She is as tall like her mother.
She is as tall as her mother.
The first as must be followed by an adjective or adverb, then the second as.
He works as hard his classmates.
He works as hard as his classmates.
As ... as can compare adverbs or adjectives, but the structure must stay complete.
