Đây là một điểm ngữ pháp rất dễ sai vì trong tiếng Việt không có mạo từ như a/an/the. Với tên địa lý trong tiếng Anh, bạn không thể chỉ nhìn nghĩa “địa danh” mà đoán được có the hay không; nhiều trường hợp phải học theo từng loại và từng tên cụ thể. Quy tắc cơ bản: đa số tên quốc gia không dùng the, ví dụ France, Japan, Peru. Nhưng nhiều tên địa lý khác lại dùng the, như sông, biển, đại dương, dãy núi, sa mạc. Vì vậy ta nói the Nile, the Pacific Ocean, the Alps, the Sahara. Ngoài ra, một số tên quốc gia có dạng số nhiều hoặc có cấu trúc mô tả cũng dùng the, ví dụ the Netherlands, the Philippines, the United States, the United Kingdom. Cách nhớ tốt nhất là học cả cụm từ, không học riêng danh từ. Hãy nhớ: France nhưng the Netherlands; Japan nhưng the United States; the Nile, the Alps, the Amazon. Articles with place names are partly predictable and partly by list. Most countries do not take the: France, Japan, Peru. But many geographical names do take the: rivers, seas, oceans, mountain ranges, deserts, and some plural or descriptive country names such as the Netherlands, the Philippines, the United States, and the United Kingdom. A useful exam rule is this: learn the name together with its article. Say the Nile, the Alps, the Amazon, but France, Japan, Peru. Also be careful with words like Republic, Kingdom, States, or Netherlands, because these often take the.
