The rule
And, but, and or are the three basic coordinating conjunctions. And adds ideas, but shows contrast, and or shows choice. They usually join words, phrases, or complete clauses of the same general type.
The trap
I wanted to go out and it was raining.
I wanted to go out, but it was raining.
But joins two contrasting complete ideas. It needs a comma before it when it connects two clauses.
You can have tea and coffee.
You can have tea or coffee.
Or shows a choice between alternatives.
She bought apples but oranges.
She bought apples and oranges.
And adds information or joins items in a list.
I was tired and I went home.
I was tired, so I went home.
So shows result. And, but, and or do not replace it in this meaning.
